A unique approach to family learning

It is quite common to have families where parents with different heritage background choose to communicate between themselves and with their children using one language. Usually the language is chosen based on practical knowledge of both parents and applicability to the environment the family is in. Very often children grow up exposed to just one language and loose an amazing opportunity to become bilingual.

In some cases, parents from multicultural families try to teach children additional languages and even make best efforts to bring them up bilingual. Usually good practice comes from travelling and communication with grandparents, but unless both parents can understand family languages of communication, it is hard to create a truly inclusive environment.

The same applies to the cultural traditions. Quite often in mixed background families some cultural traditions get totally forgotten to the benefits of the others.

One of the interesting facts that we came across was when a family relocates to the UK from another country, their children go to an English school and lose the ability to keep up with the developing language skills of their parent’s language. Very often they speak English back to their parents and do not have time or teachers to learn how to read and write in what was their original first language.

To address all the different challenges above, Exeter Language Club has created a unique family learning experience, where both, parents and children can join lessons together. While formal grammar and language knowledge is taught to everyone at the same time, families can also enjoy different activities to practice the communication skills and help each other with the homework. We take an approach that inclusive learning brings best results.

Also many of Exeter Language Club pupils have an International background, we are open to anyone who wants to learn new languages individually oras a family. It is possible to choose a long course, learn together and even prepare for the foreign language GCSE exams, but at the same time it is good fun to join our Holiday Boot camp classes and prepare the whole family for that very special holiday trip.

Launched in January 2018, Exeter Language club has successfully finished its first school year.  53 Certificates of Achievement were issued to the children of Exeter and Devon who were studying Russian language, Chinese Mandarin Language and Chinese Art during the Spring and Summer term. We are looking forward to seeing them all back after the Summer Holidays. We are also opening extra groups and have more spaces available from September....
